DHAKA — The press shakes the floorboards like a small earthquake, and Master Jalal smiles the way other men smile at grandchildren. His letterpress is 120 years old, and he intends to outlive it.

Once, 400 such presses lined Islampur and Banglabazar. Today fewer than twenty survive, kept alive by wedding cards, court seals and stubbornness.

Jalal's apprentice is 19. 'The machine teaches patience,' he says, wiping ink from his hands. 'The computer never taught anyone anything.'
