In a major diplomatic development, Iran has offered to mediate between its ally, the Yemeni Houthi movement, and Saudi Arabia as cross-border military escalation reaches critical levels.
Iranian Foreign Minister Sayyed Abbas Araghchi extended the offer during a telephone conversation with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on Monday (October 12, 2026). Confirming the outreach via Telegram, Araghchi emphasized that relying on military solutions over political dialogue would further destabilize the region, stating that Tehran stands ready to facilitate negotiations if both sides agree to resolve their differences politically. While Saudi state media acknowledged the phone call between the two foreign ministers, official Saudi outlets did not explicitly comment on the Iranian mediation offer.
The proposal comes amid a severe breakdown of the 2022 UN-brokered truce. Hostilities reactivated following a July 13 strike at Sanaa International Airport and escalated significantly in September when Houthi forces seized control of the vital Bab al-Mandab Strait, creating a severe blockade for Saudi oil exports. The crisis peaked this week following three consecutive days of Houthi ballistic missile and drone attacks targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, which resulted in 14 fatalities and injured over 300 individuals.
