In response to renewed direct military clashes with Yemen's Houthi rebels, Saudi Arabia is executing a strategy aimed at inflicting maximum damage on Houthi infrastructure while avoiding a long-term entrenchment in the conflict.
Analyzing the situation for Al Jazeera, Dr. Luciano Zaccara, Assistant Professor of Gulf Politics at Qatar University, explained that Saudi Arabia's core priority is protecting its own soil and strategic oil assets—including the capital, Riyadh—from Houthi drone and missile strikes. On the other hand, Houthi forces are attempting to expand their territorial footprint, counter Yemeni government offensives, and project power by proving their capacity to strike deep inside Saudi territory simultaneously.
Dr. Zaccara highlighted that Riyadh recognizes the difficulty of defeating the Houthis solely through ground forces. Consequently, Saudi Arabia seeks to utilize air superiority to dismantle Houthi military logistics while backing internationally recognized Yemeni government forces on the ground to push toward liberating the capital, Sanaa. The strategy balances deterrence against Houthi offensives with a strong reluctance to be drawn into an open-ended, costly war of attrition.
