US President Donald Trump stated that the United States may have "gone too far" in challenging and dismantling Iran's political leadership, creating a scenario where Washington is now struggling to identify viable Iranian counterparts to negotiate a diplomatic settlement.
Speaking to journalists during a Republican midterm campaign rally in Youngstown, Ohio on Monday (October 12, 2026), President Trump addressed ongoing efforts to secure a US-Iran peace deal. "We might have gone too far with the leadership because we don't know who the hell we're dealing with anymore. Nobody wants to be the president of Iran," Trump remarked. He further claimed that individuals Washington had envisioned as potential leaders in Tehran are declining to assume office, complicating diplomatic outreach.
Despite acknowledging negotiation hurdles, Trump reiterated his claims regarding US military action over the past eight months, asserting that Iran's air force and entire naval fleet of 159 vessels have been destroyed and now sit "at the bottom of the ocean". His comments come amid heightened maritime peril in the Middle East. According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), at least 19 commercial vessels have been targeted in the Strait of Hormuz, Persian Gulf, and Gulf of Oman since October 1, as Iranian forces continue strikes on strategic trade routes.
