The United States has denied visas to the media and communications team accompanying Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian for the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, while issuing a visa to the President himself, according to Iranian officials.
Habibollah Abbasi, Director General of Public Relations at the Iranian Presidency, told Mehr News Agency that despite the absence of the media delegation, the Iranian public will be kept updated on the President's bilateral engagements throughout his five-day trip. President Pezeshkian will be accompanied by Chief of Staff Mohsen Haji-Mirzaei and Head of Presidential Protocol Seyyed Abbas Mousavi. The US government has not officially commented on the decision.
The move comes amid heightened bilateral tensions over maritime disputes in the Strait of Hormuz. Following military confrontations between US-Israeli forces and Iran earlier this year, diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran remain deadlocked.
