President Vladimir Putin's ruling United Russia party has secured a major landslide victory in the State Duma parliamentary elections, according to full results released by the Central Election Commission on Monday (September 21).
The ruling party won 350 out of 450 seats in the lower house of parliament following a three-day voting process held from September 18 to 20. Official voter turnout reached 59.32 percent, with United Russia securing over 58 percent of the total vote.
The victory extends United Russia's 25-year control over the State Duma, marking its largest margin of victory to date. Al Jazeera's Moscow correspondent Dmitri Medvedenko noted that the high turnout and substantial vote share will likely be viewed by Moscow as strong public backing for its governance and ongoing actions in Ukraine.
