A social organizer named Md. Mohiuddin (36) was critically injured after being hacked with a sharp weapon in the Karnafuli area of Chattogram on Thursday night (September 24, 2026), allegedly for actively protesting illegal drug trade in his neighborhood. The incident sparked intense local fury, leading an enraged mob to vandalize and set fire to the home and cattle shed of the accused drug dealer, resulting in the death of livestock.
According to local residents and police, Mohiuddin, an active member of a newly formed anti-drug youth group in the Ahsania Para area of Sikalbaha Union, had been vocal against local drug operations. This position created severe friction with Mujibur Rahman, a known drug dealer in the area, and his associates. On Thursday evening, an altercation broke out between Mohiuddin and Mujibur's associate, Ibrahim, near Masterhat. Ibrahim subsequently attacked Mohiuddin with a machete, leaving him severely wounded. Locals rushed Mohiuddin to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for urgent treatment.
As news of the attack spread, angry residents staged a demonstration and attacked Mujibur's residence, setting fire to the house and an adjacent barn. Fire service and police units later arrived at the scene to extinguish the flames and restore order. Karnafuli Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Noor Ahmed confirmed that police visited the scene and interviewed the injured victim at CMCH, adding that legal action will follow formal complaints.
