Bangladesh Envoy Irene Khan Calls for UN Security Council Action Against Illegal Israeli Occupation in Palestine
United Nations Headquarters in New York, where Ambassador Irene Khan delivered Bangladesh's statement before the Security Council.

Ambassador Irene Zubaida Khan, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has reaffirmed Dhaka’s unwavering support for the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to self-determination. Speaking at a UN Security Council Open Debate titled "The Situation in the Middle East, Including the Palestinian Question" at UN Headquarters in New York on Friday (October 16, 2026), she called on the Security Council to take immediate, effective action to halt illegal Israeli occupation, land annexation, and human rights violations.

Expressing deep concern over the massive devastation in Gaza and ongoing illegal settlement expansion across the West Bank and East Jerusalem, Ambassador Khan emphasized that these actions constitute explicit violations of international law and UN resolutions. She noted that prolonged Security Council deadlock has granted Israel unchecked impunity, demanding robust mechanisms to ensure accountability, protect civilians, and respect the operational mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

Additionally, Ambassador Khan condemned Israeli military strikes and occupation in Syria and Lebanon, proposing Bangladesh's support to maintain an adequate UN peacekeeping presence in Lebanon. In her address, she also issued a sharp condemnation of lethal Houthi attacks targeting airports in Saudi Arabia, which resulted in civilian casualties, including Bangladeshi migrant workers. Reaffirming Bangladesh’s commitment to a global culture of peace, she urged all regional stakeholders to exercise maximum restraint and uphold international humanitarian law.
