Prime Minister Tarique Rahman ordered the immediate suspension of a physician after personally catching him smoking inside his unhygienic office during a surprise inspection at the Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Saturday afternoon (October 17, 2026).

The Prime Minister was conducting an unannounced walkthrough of various departments to evaluate hygiene conditions, working environments, and patient care standards at the premier pediatric hospital. During the inspection, he entered the official chamber of Associate Professor Dr. Rafiqul Islam, finding the doctor actively smoking inside the room amid unsanitary surroundings. Expressing severe anger over such irresponsible conduct within a specialized children's hospital, the Prime Minister immediately instructed Prof. Dr. A.K.M. Azizul Haque, Chairman of the hospital's Management Board, to take swift disciplinary action.

Following the Prime Minister’s executive directive, hospital authorities placed Dr. Rafiqul Islam under immediate temporary suspension. Reaffirming his administration's strict zero-tolerance policy against negligence and unprofessional behavior in public institutions, the Prime Minister emphasized that all doctors and healthcare staff must maintain flawless sanitary standards and perform their duties with total accountability.
