In a major milestone for multilateral diplomacy, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has unanimously adopted its first-ever dedicated resolution titled "The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights" during its ongoing 63rd session in Geneva.
The draft resolution was presented on behalf of a core group of nations—comprising Algeria, Austria, Bangladesh, Egypt, Greece, Guyana, Kuwait, and Nepal—under the active leadership and initiative of Bangladesh. According to an official press release issued on Tuesday (October 6, 2026) by the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the UN in Geneva, the framework establishes a balanced, forward-looking, and human-rights-centric vision for emerging technologies. It recognizes the transformational potential of AI in driving global development while establishing that AI governance and deployment must align with international human rights law, prioritizing human dignity and agency. Guidance from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs enabled the Bangladesh Permanent Mission to serve as the primary pen-holder, initiating consultations during pre-sessional meetings in August 2026. The resolution specifically mandates enhanced international cooperation, technical assistance, knowledge sharing, and capacity building to ensure developing nations enjoy equitable access to emerging technology.
