Battery-Powered E-Rickshaw Registration Begins Today Across 13 City Corporations in Bangladesh
Battery-powered e-rickshaws navigating urban traffic ahead of the nationwide city corporation registration rollout.

Registration for battery-powered three-wheeler e-rickshaws officially commenced across 13 city corporations in Bangladesh on Monday, November 2, 2026. Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives (LGRD) State Minister Mir Shahe Alam announced the rollout during a briefing at the secretariat on Sunday, outlining a comprehensive legal framework to bring these vehicles under regulatory control.

The legal foundation was established via an amendment to Section 120 of the Local Government (City Corporation) Act, 2009. Under the new guidelines, registration fees are set at ৳8,000 for two-passenger e-rickshaws (with a ৳4,000 annual renewal fee) and ৳10,000 for four-passenger models (with a ৳500 annual renewal fee), alongside an additional ৳1,000 fee for QR code-enabled fitness certificates. Each vehicle is permitted a maximum operational lifespan of 12 years.

To oversee manufacturing standards, a 7-member committee comprising representatives from LGRD, BUET, city corporations, traffic police, and district administrations has been formed. E-rickshaws must conform to approved BUET designs. In Dhaka, authorities plan to introduce an 8-zone system (four zones in each city corporation), featuring color-coded vehicles restricted to their designated zones to manage traffic congestion. While driver licensing will be introduced in a subsequent phase, authorities have assured operators that there will be no immediate eviction, and existing vehicles can continue operating while transitioning through the formal registration process.
