The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (ICAO) is gearing up for a crucial Universal Security Audit Programme (USAP-CMA) audit scheduled from October 26 to November 6, 2026, which will examine aviation security oversight and implementation at CAAB headquarters, Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA), and Osmani International Airport. While CAAB Member (Security) Air Commodore Md Asif Iqbal reported that 97 percent of preparations are complete—bolstered by recent strong showings in UK Department for Transport (DfT) audits where HSIA and Osmani scored 94% and 98% respectively—the upcoming assessment comes on the heels of a security lapse on July 16, when 31 rounds of live ammunition slipped through HSIA security undetected before being discovered in Delhi.
Security experts like former BAF Wing Commander ATM Nazrul Islam and TAS Group Chairman KM Mozibul Hoque have emphasized the need for zero tolerance, rigorous ground implementation, scanner maintenance, and multi-agency coordination. Meanwhile, Civil Aviation Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat, speaking at the "Airport Emergency Exercise (Fire) 2026", stressed uniform security protocols for all individuals including VIPs, plans for anti-drone systems, and strict compliance to protect the nation's aviation image.
