Case Filed Against Ex-Major Akhtaruzzaman Over HSIA Chaos and Physical Assault on Security Official
Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, where a case was filed against Major (retd.) Akhtaruzzaman following an altercation with airport security and executive officials over baggage delays.

A criminal case has been filed against Major (retd.) Akhtaruzzaman for allegedly causing chaos, obstructing government duties, and physically assaulting an on-duty security officer over luggage and trolley shortages at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA). Security Officer Md. Shahriar Alam Sojib filed the case (Case No. 06) under multiple sections of the Penal Code at the Airport Police Station on Friday (October 2, 2026).

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the incident occurred on October 1 at around 10:40 AM following the arrival of a flight from Medina (BG-338). Due to heavy passenger volume, a luggage delay and shortage of trolleys developed around luggage belt No. 8, triggering passenger discontent. As airport Executive Director Group Captain S. M. Rageeb Samad arrived at the scene following a call from Dhaka-5 MP Mohammad Kamal Hossain to de-escalate the tension, Major (retd.) Akhtaruzzaman aggressively charged at him, verbally abused him, and threatened physical violence. He also allegedly made highly inappropriate remarks regarding the Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism.

The situation escalated further when protocol assistants accompanying Major Akhtaruzzaman began recording videos inside the Key Point Installation (KPI) restricted area. When Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin, an on-duty security supervisor, asked them to stop recording, Akhtaruzzaman hurled abuse at him and physically assaulted him. Furthermore, he reportedly threw away bottles of holy Zamzam water belonging to other passengers from trolleys and acted aggressively toward a Biman Bangladesh Airlines representative.

The complainant noted that such actions obstructed government officials from performing their duties within a sensitive installation, posing a serious threat to airport security and public order.

Police registered the case under sections 186, 189, 294, 323, 352, 353, 504, and 506 of the Penal Code, covering charges of obstructing public servants, assault, criminal force, intentional insult, and criminal intimidation. Law enforcement stated that a thorough investigation is underway using CCTV footage, witness statements, and collected evidence to take strict legal action.

Notably, Major (retd.) Akhtaruzzaman has a history of controversial political conduct. He was previously expelled five times from his former political party, the BNP, for breaching party discipline, resulting in the termination of his primary membership and all party positions. Observers view this recent airport incident as a continuation of his pattern of disruptive behavior.
