Violent clashes broke out in the capital's Mirpur-10 area on Wednesday (September 30, 2026) during an eviction drive conducted by the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) targeting illegal sidewalk encroachments.
According to Mirpur Model Station Duty Officer Md. Shahidul Islam, tension escalated rapidly after an electrical short-circuit ignited an operational fire during the eviction process, sparking outrage among street vendors and local hawkers. Aggrieved traders clashed with law enforcement and city officials, setting fire to three DNCC garbage trucks and vandalizing an excavator alongside a police patrol vehicle. Fire Service and Civil Defense units dispatched two firefighting vehicles to the scene to extinguish the flames and restore order amidst ongoing security deployments across the Mirpur-10 intersection.
