Police have arrested auto-rickshaw driver Sumon in connection with the murder of 15-year-old schoolgirl Jannatul Tazmin, whose body was recovered from a paddy field in Lalmai, Cumilla.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Media) Lutfur Rahman confirmed that a special police team apprehended Sumon during a drive in Chittagong city on Friday (October 9, 2026) following intelligence leads. Sumon was identified as the driver of the CNG-driven auto-rickshaw that transported Tazmin, a 7th-grade student at Farida Vidyayatan School in Cumilla city. Tazmin, daughter of Renata Pharmaceuticals employee Abdul Alim, had been returning from Cox's Bazar late Wednesday night and shared her live location and a message with her father around 1:45 AM after boarding the auto-rickshaw at Paduar Bazar. Her body was discovered on Thursday morning in a crop field alongside an abandoned auto-rickshaw near the Cumilla-Noakhali highway in Jagatpur village.
Following a murder case filed by her father at Lalmai Police Station against unidentified assailants, law enforcement tracked Sumon through CCTV footage and family questioning. A formal press briefing will be held upon Sumon's arrival in Cumilla.
