
In a major anti-smuggling operation at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA), the Dhaka Customs House Preventive Team intercepted a passenger carrying smuggled diamonds, platinum, gold jewelry, and precious gemstones valued at approximately Tk 2.7 crore.
According to a press release issued by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Sunday (October 11, 2026), NBR Public Relations Officer Md. Al Amin Sheikh confirmed that the raid targeted Biman Bangladesh Airlines Flight BG-396, which arrived from Kolkata on Saturday night at 8:30 PM. Acting on intelligence regarding gold and diamond smuggling, customs officers monitored key airport locations.
Passenger Md. Joni Rahman attempted to cross the Green Channel without declaring his baggage following immigration clearance. Upon scanning his luggage, officers detected metallic density concealed within pickle jars. A thorough search yielded 389 18K gold diamond rings (478g), 151 platinum diamond rings (450g), 472 18K gold diamond nose pins (103g), 18K white gold and silver diamond jewelry, 720 precious gems (including rubies, topazes, and 45 carats of loose diamonds), alongside 23 jewelry certification cards. Dhaka Customs House has filed a criminal case against the passenger at the local police station.
