DNCC Administrator Declares No More Hawkers Allowed on Mirpur Footpaths; Alternative Rehabilitation Plans Underway
Restored footpaths in Mirpur following DNCC's eviction drives as authorities finalize structured rehabilitation zones for street vendors.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan has announced that street hawkers will no longer be allowed to set up shop on footpaths across Mirpur-10 and Mirpur-1. The statement was made on Monday, November 2, 2026, following a meeting at the DNCC conference room with a 10-member delegation from the Bangladesh Hawkers Union, who submitted a memorandum demanding vendor rehabilitation.

Acknowledging that hawkers form an integral part of the urban economy, Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan revealed that DNCC is actively identifying alternative sites in Mirpur-10, Mirpur-1, and Uttara. The government is planning to introduce Holiday Markets and dedicated vending zones capable of accommodating 300 to 500 shops. Under the new rehabilitation policy, hawkers will be permitted to operate only using portable wheel-mounted stalls, while fixed wooden platforms (chouki) are strictly prohibited.

The DNCC Administrator noted that eviction drives became unavoidable after vendor syndicates illegally expanded operations beyond footpaths onto primary roadways, completely blocking pedestrian movement. Both the DNCC authorities and hawker representatives agreed that complications escalated following the events of August 5, emphasizing that genuine, long-standing vendors will be prioritized during the upcoming relocation process. Senior police officials, including Gulshan Zone DC Md. Ruhul Kabir and the Officers-in-Charge (OCs) of Gulshan and Banani police stations, were present during the meeting.
