Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has initiated plans to acquire a sizable tract of land to construct a large-scale graveyard, addressing the acute shortage of burial space across the capital.
DNCC Administrator Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan disclosed the initiative on Thursday (October 8, 2026) while interacting with journalists following his visit to the Government Unani and Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital in Mirpur-13 on the occasion of World Ayurveda Day.
Highlighting the disparity between urban residential development and civic burial facilities, Administrator Khan noted that rapidly increasing population density has forced city graveyards to repeatedly reuse existing gravesites.
To resolve this structural constraint, DNCC is coordinating with the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives to purchase suitable land from housing developers and establish a permanent, modern cemetery to meet future urban demands.
