Addressing a scientific seminar titled ‘Osteoporosis: A Preventable Epidemic’ at the Super Specialised Hospital building of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) on Tuesday (October 20, 2026) marking World Osteoporosis Day, Dr Zubaida Rahman, Vice-President of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation, called for a coordinated nationwide programme to ensure treatment and raise awareness regarding osteoporosis.
Describing it as a "silent" disease affecting an estimated 6 million or more people in Bangladesh—particularly elderly women—she highlighted that regional and urban studies show alarmingly high prevalences of bone density deficiency, osteopenia, and osteoporosis.
To combat this, she proposed forming an 'Osteoporosis Society', observing an annual 'Osteoporosis Awareness Month', engaging 100,000 frontline health workers, establishing community-based screening camps, and utilizing the 'Fracture Risk Assessment Tool' (FRAX). The seminar was organized by the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), chaired by DAB President Professor Dr Harun Al Rashid, and addressed by prominent medical professionals and leaders including Professor Dr Farhad Halim Donar and Dr Abdus Salam, MP.
