Empathy, Not Stigma, Is Key to Substance Recovery: Prof. Dr. Mohit Kamal
Mental health professionals and addiction recovery advocates gather at Dhaka Ahsania Mission to celebrate Recovery Day 2026 and call for systemic healthcare reforms.

Empathy and family support are far more essential than social stigma in enabling individuals to recover from substance dependency, stated renowned psychiatrist and Chairman of ISSUP Bangladesh Chapter, Prof. Dr. M. A. Mohit Kamal, during a discussion organized to mark "Recovery Day 2026" in Shyamoli, Dhaka, on Wednesday (September 30, 2026).

Co-hosted by Dhaka Ahsania Mission and ISSUP Bangladesh Chapter under the global theme "Recovery Is Real: Restoring Every Aspect of Life," the event brought together healthcare professionals and civil society leaders. Presenting the keynote paper, Iqbal Masud, Director of Ahsania Mission Health and Nutrition Sector, highlighted national research showing that approximately 8.2 million people—4.88 percent of Bangladesh's population—use illegal substances, with 92 percent initiating use before age 25. Despite 69 percent seeking treatment or rehabilitation, only 13 percent currently have access to specialized care facilities. Speakers urged the government to integrate addiction counseling and evidence-based mental health services into district-level healthcare systems, strengthen quality control across private rehabilitation centers, and expand specialized facilities for women and adolescents.
