The European Union no longer views Bangladesh through a conventional donor-recipient lens but treats the nation as a partner of growing strategic importance in the Bay of Bengal and broader Indo-Pacific region, declared EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller.
Speaking on Sunday (October 4, 2026) during the second day of the Bay of Bengal Conversation 2026—an international conference organized in Dhaka by the Center for Governance Studies (CGS)—Ambassador Miller highlighted that Bangladesh stands at a critical development crossroads as it navigates LDC graduation alongside political transformations, institutional revitalizations, economic pressures, and climate vulnerabilities. Emphasizing that Bangladesh is on track to rank among the top 30 global economies by 2030, Miller stressed the necessity of building broader political consensus to carry forward ongoing constitutional reforms. He outlined EU plans to support Bangladesh's smooth LDC transition by exploring a future Free Trade Agreement (FTA)—marking the first time the EU has extended such a proposal to a country before formal graduation—while advocating for a level playing field for European businesses and strong, predictable institutional oversight.
