Road accidents across Bangladesh claimed 423 lives and left 674 people injured in 442 separate incidents during September, averaging 14 fatalities per day, according to a report released by the Road Safety Foundation.

The monthly casualty report released on Sunday (October 4, 2026)—compiled from data across nine national dailies, 17 news portals, electronic media, and field monitoring—revealed that 73 women and 61 children were among the deceased. Motorcycle crashes accounted for the highest single category of fatalities, with 154 accidents killing 139 riders and passengers (32.86% of total deaths). Pedestrian deaths comprised 25.5% (106 fatalities), while 53 drivers and transport helpers lost their lives. Geographically, Dhaka division registered the highest casualty rate, with 132 accidents claiming 134 lives (31.67% of nationwide deaths), including 21 fatalities in Dhaka city alone. The foundation highlighted excessive speeding and loss of vehicle control (38% of cases) as primary crash triggers, while also recording 16 deaths in 11 waterway accidents and 19 deaths in 23 railway incidents during the same month. To curb the rising toll, the organization outlined recommendations including structural reforms to BRTA and DTCA, enforcement of speed control technology, dedicated service lanes for slow-moving vehicles, and the formation of a unified Ministry of Transport.
