Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has stated that given the significant expansion in bilateral trade—marked by large-scale purchases of US aircraft, petroleum, and soybeans—the United Nations and the United States should extend greater financial assistance and support to Bangladesh.
Speaking to reporters in Bangkok, Thailand, on Wednesday (October 14, 2026) following high-level discussions with US Treasury Department representatives on the sidelines of the World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings, the Finance Minister emphasized that US officials have agreed in principle with Bangladesh's position. Minister Khasru pointed out that while Bangladesh has historically received limited direct aid from the US, recent bilateral commercial ties have deepened substantially through multi-billion-dollar import commitments. "If this support doesn't come now, when will it?" he remarked, noting that US counterparts concurred with Dhaka's call for increased backing.
Highlighting a strategic pivot in national economic policy, the Finance Minister stressed that the government is actively moving away from debt dependency toward foreign direct investment (FDI) and joint ventures, noting extensive talks held with the US EXIM Bank. In addition to US Treasury officials, the Bangladeshi delegation also engaged with grant-administering agencies as part of ongoing negotiations regarding IMF lending conditions, structural economic reforms, and long-term capital investments.
