Former Bangladeshi Ambassador Mohammad Sufiur Rahman has been elected as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) Advisory Committee representing the Asia-Pacific region.

The United Nations Human Rights Council announced the appointment during its 63rd session on Wednesday (October 7, 2026). Functioning as the expert think tank for the Human Rights Council, the Advisory Committee provides research-based expertise, specialized advice, and policy recommendations on global human rights issues at the Council's request. Sufiur Rahman, a 1991-batch Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) Foreign Affairs officer, brings extensive diplomatic experience to the role. He served as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN and other International Organizations in Geneva, Switzerland, from October 2022 to May 2024. His career includes appointments as High Commissioner to Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji (2018–2022), Ambassador to Myanmar during the critical 2014–2017 Rohingya influx period, and High Commissioner to Sri Lanka (2012–2014). Since July 2025, Rahman has served as a Senior Research Fellow at North South University’s South Asian Institute of Policy and Governance (SIPG).
