The Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) has launched a comprehensive initiative to decentralize its manpower, rescue equipment, and command structure to ensure uninterrupted rescue operations in the event of a major earthquake damaging fire stations or headquarters.
Under this strategy, rescue equipment is being distributed across 41 points in and around Dhaka, a 50-to-60-member Special Rescue Team (SRT) has been stationed in Purbachal, 20-member SRTs have been formed in divisional cities, and 100 fire stations outside divisional centers are being kept on standby to support the capital.
To protect operational continuity if the Old Dhaka headquarters is compromised, senior officials—including two directors—and media operations have been shifted to Mirpur, while training activities moved to Purbachal.
Additionally, a earthquake-resistant multi-story headquarters is under construction in Mirpur-10 using base isolation technology with JICA support, designed to withstand an 8.0 magnitude earthquake by 2028. FSCD is also establishing an MoU with the Bangladesh Air Force for air transport support during road blockages and conducted nationwide communication exercises with the Amateur Radio Association of Bangladesh (ARAB) to ensure resilience during network outages.
