State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir expressed optimism regarding a potential state visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to New Delhi, while questioning how Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi would respond if an ousted leader responsible for political atrocities operated from Bangladeshi soil.
Speaking to journalists on the closing day of the Bay of Bengal Conversation 2026 at a Dhaka hotel on Monday (October 5, 2026), the State Minister addressed ongoing diplomatic dynamics between Dhaka and New Delhi. Kabir noted that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has never declined visiting India, but urged observers to consider the unique challenges facing a newly formed administration. He emphasized that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India after committing mass atrocities, pointing out that her continued presence and political rhetoric from Indian territory complicate bilateral relations. Kabir questioned whether PM Modi would visit Dhaka under reciprocal circumstances. Nevertheless, the State Minister reaffirmed that active diplomatic engagement and dialogue between both capitals continue, expressing confidence that a mutually beneficial outcome regarding the Prime Minister’s Delhi visit and bilateral discussions, including the renewal of the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, will be achieved based on Bangladesh's core national interests.
