Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested two individuals, including a woman, on charges of mental harassment and abetment to suicide following the death of 28-year-old Nisha Rani, who set herself on fire at Bangshal Harijan Colony in Dhaka.

The arrested individuals were identified as Meenakshi Rani (30) and her alleged partner Biki Babu, also known as Shri Biki Hela. Speaking at a press briefing at the DMP Media Center on Monday (October 5, 2026), DMP Joint Commissioner (Crime) and Joint Commissioner (Headquarters - Additional Charge) Md. Faruk Hossain detailed the events leading up to the incident. According to police, Nisha had accompanied her friend Meenakshi to Dhakeshwari Temple on October 2, where they met Biki Babu. After visiting Ramna Kali Temple, tensions arose over intimate behavior between Meenakshi and Biki, which left Nisha mentally distressed. Later that evening, when Nisha visited Meenakshi's residence in Bangshal, the duo verbally abused and insulted her. Overwhelmed by emotional distress, Nisha poured kerosene on herself and set herself ablaze inside Meenakshi’s residence in the early hours of October 3 at around 3:00 AM. Locals rescued her with severe burns and admitted her to the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries at 1:25 AM on October 4. Bangshal Police Station registered a case following complaints from the victim's family, leading to the arrest of Meenakshi from Bangshal at 6:30 AM on Monday and Biki Babu from Nabil Highway Hotel in Sirajganj at 3:30 AM. Both suspects have been forwarded to court.
