Inspection Begins at Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant to Verify Safety and Power Generation Readiness

The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA) has initiated an inspection to evaluate safety measures and power generation readiness for the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.

The inspection, which commenced on Sunday (October 11), reviews the technical capabilities, operational readiness, and safety protocols of Unit-1. The news was confirmed on Sunday evening by Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL), the operating entity of the facility.

According to a senior NPCBL official, the inspection formally began following an inaugural meeting held on Sunday morning at the auditorium of the Rooppur Project Training Center. Managing Director of NPCBL, Dr. Zahedul Hasan, along with relevant representatives, experts, and VO-Safety specialists, participated in the event.

Throughout the inspection, various technical and operational aspects of Unit-1 will be audited prior to launching power generation. Experts will also assess the functionality of key equipment and systems, mandatory documentation, operational procedures, and the implementation of physical safety measures.

The inspection process will continue from October 11 through October 17. Project officials stated that data and observations gathered during this week-long audit will be thoroughly evaluated to fulfill all necessary regulatory compliance steps before moving on to the next phase.

Meanwhile, Unit-1 of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant successfully achieved reactor criticality on Sunday at 3:34 PM, marking a crucial milestone in sustaining a controlled nuclear chain reaction. The regulatory inspection is considered a vital prerequisite as the plant prepares to incrementally scale up its power output capacity.

NPCBL Managing Director Dr. Zahedul Hasan reaffirmed that safety remains the top priority during the commissioning and activation of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. He added that all testing, inspections, and subsequent procedures are strictly adhering to approved protocols and regulatory guidelines.
