The Government of Japan has extended a grant of USD 145,000 under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) to expand early tuberculosis (TB) detection capabilities across underprivileged urban slum communities in Dhaka.
The formal grant agreement was executed at the Embassy of Japan in Dhaka on Monday (October 5, 2026), between Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Saida Shinichi and representatives from the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b), with the official press release issued on Tuesday. Under the initiative titled "The Project for Procurement of a Land Cruiser for Tuberculosis Diagnosis in Dhaka District," icddr,b will procure a specialized Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle equipped with a Fujifilm portable digital X-ray unit. The mobile diagnostic setup will enable outreach medical teams to directly deliver on-site TB screening and diagnostic care to low-income populations facing healthcare access barriers. Project organizers estimate that the mobile unit will screen approximately 9,000 individuals annually, identifying undiagnosed cases early to initiate prompt treatment and halt community transmission. Ambassador Shinichi reaffirmed Japan's commitment to protecting human dignity and supporting vulnerable populations through targeted healthcare infrastructure.
