Plot, house, and flat owners in the expanded Rupnagar residential area of Mirpur, Dhaka, have called for immediate law enforcement intervention following widespread allegations of illegal land grabbing, extortion, and obstruction of public roads across National Housing Authority (NHA) property.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association (CRAB) on Monday (October 5, 2026), President of the Expanded Rupnagar Residential Area Plot, House, and Flat Owners Welfare Association, Freedom Fighter A.K.M. Shamsuzzaman, detailed ongoing criminal activities in Blocks A and B under Section-8 of Rupnagar Police Station. Shamsuzzaman alleged that organized grabbers build unauthorized structures overnight, place illegal signboards, enclose plots with brick walls, and block 20-foot public roads using welded iron frames. Nearly 50 plot owners face extortion demands while constructing buildings, with workers subjected to violence and threats if demands are refused. Furthermore, approximately 90 katha of land, including a 40-foot wide road on the eastern side of Block B, has been illegally occupied for rickshaw garages and illicit drug trade operations. Despite multiple General Diaries (GDs) and written complaints filed by NHA's Mirpur office with Rupnagar Police Station—including CCTV footage from July 18 showing extortionists intimidating workers at a Daffodil Homes Limited site—effective action remains pending. Association leaders urged police and local authorities to dismantle illegal structures, arrest culprits, and guarantee safety for property owners.
