The Bangladesh Weather Observation Team (BWOT) announced on Saturday (October 10, 2026) that the southwest monsoon is scheduled to commence its official withdrawal from the country starting Sunday, October 11.
The departure process will initiate in the northwestern region before expanding across remaining divisions, resulting in a dramatic reduction of seasonal rainfall. According to BWOT forecasts, monsoon conditions will exit the Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions on October 11, followed by 70% to 80% of Bangladesh—including Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Khulna, and Barishal—by October 13. The final exit from southern Chattogram is expected between October 13 and 17.
While no major low-pressure systems or tropical depressions are anticipated through mid-October, meteorologists warn that the post-monsoon transition will induce significant diurnal temperature fluctuations—marked by hot, humid days and cool, damp nights. Health experts and BWOT officials caution that this sharp thermal contrast poses heightened health risks, particularly for children and the elderly, who are increasingly vulnerable to seasonal flu, fevers, coughs, and respiratory ailments.
