Nobel Peace Laureate and Grameen Bank founder Dr. Muhammad Yunus has been conferred with the prestigious Hillary Rodham Clinton Award at a ceremony held at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
Former US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton personally presented the award to Dr. Yunus on Thursday evening (US Local Time) at the university's historic Gaston Hall. Over 400 distinguished guests, including ambassadors from 25 countries, entrepreneurs, scholars, and global researchers, accorded Dr. Yunus a standing ovation as his name was announced.
Dr. Yunus was among four global trailblazers honored this year. The three other awardees were Reema Nanavaty, Director of Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) in India; fashion designer and founder of the Tory Burch Foundation Tory Burch; and Muna Sukhtian, Board Chair of Jordan’s Microfund for Women, who received the special Georgetown Ambassadors Award.
Commending Dr. Yunus, Hillary Clinton praised his transformative impact on microfinance, noting how Grameen Bank’s model empowered women to achieve financial independence and security worldwide. Accepting the award, Dr. Yunus marked the 50-year milestone of his anti-poverty crusade, emphasizing that women borrowers are the true owners and drivers of Grameen Bank. Reaffirming his vision for a "Three Zero World" (Zero Poverty, Zero Unemployment, and Zero Net Carbon Emissions), Dr. Yunus announced plans to launch Grameen University by the end of 2026 to reform education and nurture young entrepreneurs rather than job seekers.
