
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has issued strict directives to evaluate and report on the overall earthquake preparedness of Dhaka and other major urban centers across Bangladesh.
Chaired by Committee Chairman Munshi Rofiqul Alam MP at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Tuesday (October 6, 2026), the committee mandated that a comprehensive assessment of structural readiness and emergency response protocols for urban earthquakes be presented at its next sitting. Attended by Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu, Minister of State M Iqbal Hossain, and committee members including Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury and A T M Azharul Islam, the meeting underscored the urgent need for swift early-warning mechanisms in disaster-prone regions. The parliamentary body instructed authorities to compile updated district-wise lists of disaster shelters and trained volunteers for distribution to local Members of Parliament. Emphasizing transparency, the committee called for strict oversight on shelter maintenance and contractor compliance, warning against the use of substandard construction materials. Prior to discussions, Chairman Munshi Rofiqul Alam paid tribute to historical figures, liberation war martyrs, and victims of the July 2024 movement.
