Attempts to stifle citizens' freedom of expression and suppress political dissent under the guise of cyber legislation will not be tolerated, stated Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party) General Secretary Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuaad on Tuesday.
Addressing an exchange meeting titled "Proposed Cyber Protection Act: Security vs Harassment"—organized by AB Party Lawyers at the Tofazzal Hossain Manik Miah Auditorium of the National Press Club—Barrister Fuaad emphasized that political criticism on social media and questioning government actions must never be weaponized to categorize citizens as cybercriminals. Highlighting recent arrests of students, teachers, and homemakers over social media posts—including an incident in Gazipur involving a student commenting on billing issues—Fuaad urged the government to clarify why positive provisions under the interim administration's cyber ordinance were being altered. He warned the ruling administration against treading the same repressive path as the previous Awami League regime regarding digital security laws, stressing that expressing an opinion, reacting with an emoji, or criticizing political parties like the BNP should never constitute a cyber offense. The discussion was chaired by AB Party Joint General Secretary Barrister Zobayer Ahmed Bhuiyan, moderated by Barrister Abbas Islam Khan Noman, with welcome remarks delivered by Joint General Secretary Advocate Abdullah Al Mamun Rana.
