PM Tarique Rahman Assures Abrar Fahad’s Family of Full Support for Swift Justice and Memorial Initiatives
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman meeting with the parents and family members of slain BUET student Abrar Fahad at the Secretariat on Thursday.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has assured the family of slain Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad of full government support to ensure swift legal procedures as the high-profile murder case reaches the Supreme Court Appellate Division.

The assurance came during a meeting on Thursday afternoon (October 8, 2026) at the Secretariat in Dhaka, where Abrar's father Md. Barkat Ullah, mother Rokeya Khatun, younger brother Abrar Faiyaz,

and immediate relatives met with the Prime Minister. During the meeting, the Prime Minister stated that while the judiciary acts independently, the government will extend all necessary cooperation to expedite the legal process. Addressing community requests, the Prime Minister promised to construct a bridge over the Gorai River in Kushtia named in honor of Abrar Fahad and instructed officials to expedite construction on a local mosque adjacent to Abrar's grave.

Furthermore, following a proposal from Abrar's brother to include Abrar's story in national educational curricula and name a BUET residential hall after him, the Prime Minister immediately conferred with the Education Secretary to review the proposals. Abrar Fahad was tortured to death at BUET's Sher-e-Bangla Hall in October 2019; after a lower court awarded the death penalty to 20 convicts and life imprisonment to five others in December 2021, the High Court upheld the verdicts in March 2025 before the case proceeded to the Appellate Division.
