Police used water cannons and sound grenades to disperse protesting ready-made garment (RMG) workers attempting to block the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway at Uttara's Rajlakshmi crossing on Saturday morning (October 17, 2026).
Marking the fifth consecutive day of labor agitation, workers attempted to assemble on the highway to press for their demands—which include the immediate clearance of back pay and a minimum base salary of BDT 30,000. As police moved in to prevent the highway blockade, protesters armed with sticks clashed with law enforcement personnel and hurled brickbats. During the scuffle, an Industrial Police vehicle was vandalized, leaving several police officers injured.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of DMP Uttara Division Md. Rezaul Karim confirmed that non-lethal crowd control measures—including sound grenades and water cannons—were deployed to scatter the protesters and restore order. He stated that the situation is currently under firm control, no prolonged road blockage was permitted, and normal vehicular movement has been fully restored along the arterial highway.
