In the wake of a viral video showing a man being publicly assaulted on a Dhanmondi street, police have arrested and secured summary court sentences for both the assailant and the alleged harasser, while a police officer present at the scene has been withdrawn for gross negligence of duty.
The incident unfolded on Monday afternoon (October 12, 2026) on Satmasjid Road opposite the Bangladesh Eye Hospital in Dhanmondi. A 23-year-old woman alleged that Shahid Abdullah Al Masud (48)—reported to be suffering from mental illness—touched her inappropriately ("bad touch"). Enraged, the victim called her relative, Khaled Hasan (35), a graphic designer by profession. Khaled arrived at the scene and publicly slapped, kicked, and forced Masud to do knee-bends while holding his ears. A 2-minute-12-second video of the assault quickly circulated on social media, sparking widespread debate.
On Wednesday morning (October 14) around 11:45 AM, police detained Khaled Hasan from the Meena Bazar area in Dhanmondi and produced him before the DMP Ramna Zone Special Metropolitan Magistrate Court, which sentenced him to 15 days in jail. Meanwhile, since the victim declined to file a formal written molestation case, police forwarded Masud directly to the magistrate court yesterday, where he was sentenced to 1-month imprisonment.
Addressing police accountability, Dhanmondi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Imdadul Islam Tayeb confirmed that Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Abdul Hai has been officially withdrawn from the station for standing idly by and failing to intervene while the public assault occurred right in front of him.
