The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is currently verifying the identities and motives of approximately 280 to 300 individuals detained outside the central headquarters of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) at GPO Square in Gulistan.
Speaking to reporters outside the JSD office on Saturday evening (September 26, 2026), Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Motijheel Division Md. Harun Or Rashid stated that police acted on specific intelligence indicating that members and affiliates of the banned Bangladesh Awami League had gathered at the location for questionable purposes. Local student-public activists assisted law enforcement during the joint drive conducted by DMP Crime and Detective Branch (DB) personnel. DC Harun revealed that police possess preliminary evidence that the assembly chanted banned "Joy Bangla" slogans inside and around the venue. Due to the high volume of detainees, individuals are being processed across Paltan Model Police Station and neighboring stations. Formal charges will be brought against those found involved in political sabotage, while uninvolved individuals, including any verified journalists or bystanders, will be released following background checks.
