President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Calls for Stronger Parliamentary Cooperation with United Kingdom

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called upon visiting British lawmakers to play an active role in deepening parliamentary cooperation and institutional ties between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom.

The President extended the call during a bilateral meeting with a delegation from the UK’s All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Bangladesh at Bangabhaban on Thursday (October 8, 2026). The UK delegation was led by APPG Chair and British MP of Bangladeshi origin Afsana Begum, alongside Shockat Adam MP and House of Lords member Lord Qurban Hussain.

Highlighting the UK’s democratic tradition and robust governance model, President Alamgir emphasized expanding bilateral visits, joint parliamentary committee exchanges, and specialized training programs for parliamentary officials. He expressed hope that an official Bangladesh-UK Parliamentary Friendship Group would soon be formed under APPG initiatives.

Extending congratulations to Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election to the presidency, MP Afsana Begum praised his long struggle for democratic restoration and commended Bangladesh on successfully conducting free and fair national elections in 2026. President Alamgir noted that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is actively working to strengthen national state institutions modeled after established British practices. Senior presidential secretaries were present during the call.
