President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir called upon China on Wednesday (September 30, 2026) to boost direct investment in Bangladesh and play an enhanced role in facilitating the safe, dignified, and sustainable repatriation of displaced Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.
The request was made during a farewell audience granted to outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen at Bangabhaban. Commending Beijing's constructive diplomatic engagement in resolving the refugee crisis, President Alamgir urged expanded bilateral investments in key growth sectors, including readymade garments, electric vehicles, light engineering, high-tech electronics, semiconductors, and solar energy. Welcoming multilateral connectivity initiatives such as the Kunming-Chittagong Corridor and the China-Myanmar-Bangladesh Economic Corridor, the President underscored the strategic value of the Mongla Port modernization project and the establishment of the Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone. He further requested continued Chinese technical and financial backing for the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project and expressed gratitude for Beijing's funding of the 1,000-bed Bangladesh-China Friendship General Hospital alongside proposed collaboration in advanced hematological cancer therapies. Ambassador Yao assured continued support while President Alamgir praised his tenure in strengthening bilateral ties.
