Prime Minister Tarique Rahman Inspects Innovative Waste-to-Fuel Project at PMO
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inspecting the waste-to-fuel research project exhibition at the Prime Minister's Office in Dhaka on Saturday.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inspected an innovative research exhibition at the Prime Minister's Office in Tejgaon on Saturday (October 10, 2026), showcasing a pioneering technology that converts human waste, sewage, kitchen garbage, and agricultural residues into fuel oil.

During the presentation, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) Professor Dr. Md. Khalequzzaman briefed the Prime Minister on the decade-long research utilizing Hydrothermal Liquefaction (HTL) technology. Laboratory tests have successfully yielded 50% to 5% bio-crude oil rich in diesel properties. Researchers outlined plans for a pilot plant capable of processing 1 to 3 tons of waste daily, requiring an estimated budget of 100 to 120 crore Taka. Commercial scaling of this technology could potentially replace 10% to 15% of imported crude oil, saving 6,500 to 13,000 crore Taka annually in foreign exchange while mitigating waste management challenges. Prime Minister Rahman praised the initiative and assured all necessary government cooperation for its implementation. The briefing was attended by Power and Energy Minister Iqbal Mahmud Tuku, State Minister Anindyo Islam Amit, UGC member Professor Abdullah Al Mamun, KUET VC Professor Mohammad Masud, and BPC Chairman Dr. Mohammad Rafiqul Islam.
