RMG Workers Block Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Savar over 3-Point Demand; 2km Traffic Gridlock Endured
Commuters and commercial vehicles stuck in heavy traffic along the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Hemayetpur during Wednesday morning protests.

Thousands of readymade garment (RMG) workers gathered and blocked the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in the Hemayetpur area of Savar on Wednesday morning, November 4, 2026. The demonstration resulted in a severe 2-kilometer traffic gridlock, stranding thousands of commuters and inter-district transport vehicles.

The protest began around 9:00 AM when workers from several garment factories located in the Padma Mor area of Tetuljhora Union initially assembled. Workers from AKH Garments briefly joined their shifts before walking out of the factory premises to join the demonstration. The protesters subsequently marched to Hemayetpur Bus Stand and set up blockades across the highway.

The workers put forward a 3-point charter of demands:

  1. Raising the minimum monthly wage to ৳30,000 (from the current ৳12,500) to cope with high living costs.

  1. An immediate end to the illegal blacklisting of garment workers.
  2. Cancellation of arbitrary and unjust worker layoffs.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Savar Highway Police Station, Md. Asaduzzaman Noor, confirmed that additional police personnel have been deployed along the highway to prevent untoward incidents and negotiate with workers to restore normal traffic flow.
