Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant First Unit Electricity May Join National Grid Before December, Says Science & Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam
Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam addressing media representatives at the Secretariat regarding Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant progress.

Electricity from the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) could begin feeding into the national grid before December, Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam announced on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat during a press conference for the upcoming "Bangladesh AI Business Summit-2026," the minister outlined the latest technical milestones of the landmark nuclear project.

Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam stated that the plant is currently in its C-stage, requiring sequential regulatory clearances to advance through testing phases. The plant has successfully achieved 20% thermal capacity. Once thermal capacity reaches 35% to 40%, generated steam will spin the turbine to activate the generator and produce electricity. However, the minister stressed that safety remains the absolute priority: if any test yields unsatisfactory results, equipment will be disassembled, repaired, and re-tested as many times as necessary, ensuring 100% safety compliance before grid synchronization.

While projecting that power supply could begin within five to six weeks if conditions proceed smoothly, the minister declined to set a rigid deadline due to the complex technical and regulatory safeguards required in nuclear operations. He noted that resolving a recent VVR valve issue took nearly two months of meticulous work in coordination with Russian contractor Rosatom. Joint teams of Bangladeshi and Russian scientists and engineers are actively managing operations, with initial generation slated to begin at 300 MW before scaling up beyond 1,100 MW over the first six months.
