Safe Housing for All Is the Need of the Hour, Asserts Prime Minister Tarique Rahman
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman delivers the keynote address during the World Habitat Day discussion at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center in Dhaka on Monday.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has declared that ensuring safe, affordable, and sustainable housing for every citizen is a constitutional imperative and a key election commitment of the government, emphasizing that housing extends beyond basic shelter to encompass clean water, reliable electricity, proper sanitation, and efficient public transport.

Addressing a symposium organized on the occasion of World Habitat Day at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center (BCICC) in Dhaka on Monday (October 5, 2026), the Prime Minister highlighted the growing population pressure on Dhaka and major urban centers nationwide. To counter overpopulation in primary cities, the Prime Minister announced that the Ministry of Housing and Public Works is actively executing decentralized regional development strategies, including comprehensive spatial planning across Bangladesh and the creation of secondary townships surrounding the capital. Furthermore, development authorities have been established in Mymensingh, Sylhet, Barishal, Comilla, Rangpur, and Narayanganj to formulate masterplans that align with Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11). Prime Minister Tarique Rahman also called upon private sector real estate developers and stakeholders to collaborate with the government in building eco-friendly, block-based residential projects equipped with parks, playgrounds, and designated industrial zones.
