The Ministry of Youth and Sports has decided to exclude 31 athletes from its current 300-person national sports allowance list following a quarterly performance review, while initiating the inclusion of 95 new athletes, international-level coaches, and referees.
Speaking to reporters at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday (October 4, 2026) ahead of a inter-ministerial coordination meeting, State Minister for Youth and Sports Md. Aminul Haque explained that the government monitors performance every four months to ensure accountability and professional excellence. The new inclusions will bring the total number of allowance-backed athletes close to 400, toward a maximum target quota of 500. Under the scheme, cardholders receive a monthly allowance of Tk 1,00,000, backed by a Tk 60 crore annual budget within a broader Tk 200 crore youth sports allocation. Ministry Secretary Md. Mahbub-ul-Alam noted that the ministry is coordinating with Bangladesh Railway, Jiban Bima Corporation, and DMTCL to attach health insurance, medical coverage, and specialized transport benefits to the sports card. State Minister Haque further emphasized a strategic shift toward long-term year-round training aimed at winning medals at the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and the Olympics within five years.
