Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Freedom Fighter Md. Abdus Salam has urged university students to lead civic awareness campaigns against dengue transmission and illegal waste dumping, stating that student leadership is vital to preserving the livability of Dhaka city.
Speaking as chief guest at the inauguration of the newly renovated and modernized central auditorium at Jagannath University (JnU) on Sunday (October 4, 2026)—restored by DSCC at a cost of approximately BDT 2.5 crore—Administrator Salam handed over the maintenance and beautification responsibilities of the historic Bahadur Shah Park to Jagannath University administration and student bodies. Highlighting the heritage of the site, Salam noted that the monument commemorating the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny cannot remain neglected. He further allocated the Dhupkhola ground to JnU students for sports and physical development while calling upon the institution to pioneer a cultural renaissance in Old Dhaka. Additionally, responding to a formal appeal from Jagannath University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Rais Uddin, the DSCC Administrator announced the construction of an "Anti-Fascism Square" in the university area in memory of slain student Biswajit Das. The inaugural ceremony, presided over by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Rais Uddin, was attended by Dhaka-7 Member of Parliament Hamidur Rahman alongside university faculty, students, and senior municipal officials.
