Supreme Court Stays 'Immediate Recovery' Order of Tk 666 Crore Tax Claim Against Dr. Yunus's Grameen Kalyan
The Supreme Court of Bangladesh in Dhaka, where the Chamber Court stayed NBR's immediate tax collection drive against Grameen Kalyan.

In a major legal relief for Grameen Kalyan, an organization founded by Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chamber Court of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has stayed the "immediate recovery" directive issued by the High Court regarding a Tk 666 crore tax demand by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

Chamber Justice Md. Rezaul Haq passed the order on Sunday (October 18, 2026) following an appeal filed by Grameen Kalyan challenging the September 10 High Court judgment. Senior advocate Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun represented Grameen Kalyan in court. Following the order, defense counsel confirmed that Grameen Kalyan is temporarily not required to pay the BDT 666 crore back taxes to the NBR while the apex court conducts full appellate proceedings.

The dispute stems from re-evaluated income tax claims covering five consecutive assessment years: 2012–13, 2013–14, 2014–15, 2015–16, and 2016–17. Grameen Kalyan filed two separate writ petitions in 2017. Previously, an August 2024 verdict dismissing the writs was recalled due to a judicial conflict of interest involving a judge who had formerly contested the case as a Deputy Attorney General, leading to a new bench hearing that delivered the September 10 verdict now stayed by the Supreme Court.
