Temporary Storms Cannot Erase Long-Standing Bangladesh-India Relations, Says Former Indian MoS MJ Akbar
Former Indian Minister of State for External Affairs M.J. Akbar delivers his address during the Bay of Bengal Conversation 2026 in Dhaka on Sunday.

Former Indian Minister of State for External Affairs M.J. Akbar has stated that while temporary storms or passing clouds may occasionally strain Bangladesh-India relations, they cannot erase the deep-rooted, long-standing civilizational bond shared between the two neighbor states.

Addressing the second day of the 'Bay of Bengal Conversation 2026' at a Dhaka hotel on Sunday (October 4, 2026), M.J. Akbar described both Bangladesh and India as civilizational entities, noting that Bangladesh's identity is not artificial but rooted firmly in the intrinsic power of language and heritage. He observed that fluctuations in bilateral dynamics are natural, emphasizing that resolving existing queries and issues requires analyzing root causes alongside potential solutions. Asserting that momentary crises cannot eclipse underlying diplomatic synergies, Akbar reiterated that mutual respect for national sovereignty remains vital to preventing global instability and ensuring regional harmony. The three-day international conference was organized by the Center for Governance Studies (CGS).
