Police under the Uttara East Station of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested three individuals for impersonating members of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) and extorting money from a local resident in Sector 4, Uttara.
The arrestees have been identified as Md. Russel Mahbub alias Masum (42), Sohel Mirza (41), and Md. Sojib (36). According to police, the trio entered a 10th-floor apartment on Road 3 in Sector 4 at around 8:00 AM on Friday (October 2, 2026). Presenting a fraudulent DGFI identification card, they intimidated the flat owner, Kaiyum Shahriar Zahedi, claiming that criminal cases were pending against him. The impersonators demanded BDT 10 lakh to "settle" the matter, coercing the victim into paying BDT 1.59 lakh in cash. Suspecting foul play, the victim discreetly contacted the National Emergency Service 999.
DMP Media and Public Relations Deputy Commissioner Md. Akhtar Hossain confirmed that a police team responded swiftly to the site, interrogated the suspects, and verified that the presented credential was counterfeit. Law enforcement officers seized the forged DGFI ID card, BDT 1.59 lakh in cash, a Suzuki Gixxer motorcycle, a walkie-talkie set, and a pair of handcuffs. A formal extortion and impersonation case has been registered at Uttara East Police Station.
