Seminar Held in Sherpur to Declare Garo Hills as Wild Elephant Sanctuary
A seminar was held to identify elephant-habituated areas, formulate operational guidelines, and establish universal preparations aimed at resolving human-elephant conflict in the Garo Hills of Sherpur. Organized by the Mymensingh Forest Department with support from the Human-Elephant Conflict Mitigation Project, the seminar took place on Saturday (September 12) afternoon at the Jhinaigati Upazila Parishad auditorium.
Sherpur District Commissioner Ms. Farida Yasmin presided over the event, while Sherpur-3 Member of Parliament Mahmudul Haque Rubel attended as the chief guest. Mymensingh Divisional Forest Officer Kazi Md. Nurul Karim delivered the welcome address.
The event featured speeches by Chief Conservator of Forests for the Central Region ASM Zahir Uddin Akon, Conservator of Forests for Wildlife and Nature Conservation Region Sanaullah Patwary, Sherpur Police Superintendent AKM Zahirul Islam, Jahangirnagar University Zoology Department Professor Dr. Monirul H. Khan, Arannayk Foundation Executive Director Dr. Abdul Motaleb, and Jhinaigati Upazila BNP Convener Shahjahan Akand, among others.
Speakers emphasized the conservation of endangered wildlife in Bangladesh's forest regions, ensuring a wildlife-friendly environment, implementing initiatives to resolve human-elephant conflict, dynamic operations by ERT members, and urging villagers living near border areas to act with greater responsibility in curbing human-elephant clashes.
The seminar was hosted by Tawakotha Beat Officer of Rawngtia Forest Range Fahim Muntasir. Attendees included Sreebordi Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ms. Monisha Ahmed, Jhinaigati Upazila Nirbahi Officer Al Amin, Jhinaigati Police Station OC Nur Mohammad, BGB Nakshi Company Commander Subedar Saidur Rahman, Sherpur Wildlife Conservation Department Official Sumon Sarkar, Jhinaigati Upazila BNP Member Secretary Lutfor Rahman, Balijuri Range Forest Range Officer Ratul Saha Rana, Acting Range Officer of Rawngtia Range Deputy Ranger Abdul Karim, nature and environment activist journalist Mugniur Rahman Moni, tourism businessman and media worker Tareq Md. Abdullah Rana, and Gazni Forest Beat Officer Salehin Newaz Khan, alongside forest department officials, upazila administration departmental heads, political leaders, ERT members, media workers, and forest department beneficiaries.
During the program, equipment materials were distributed among ERT members, and financial donation checks were handed over to families affected by wild elephants.
